From Sunday 6 July to Saturday 13 July 2025, communities right across Australia will come together to celebrate NAIDOC Week. It’s a time to honour the history, culture and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.”
At Gold Care Medical Centre, we believe one of the best ways to keep that fire burning is by looking after your health.
That’s why we’re encouraging all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to book a free health check with us during NAIDOC Week — and start building a stronger, healthier future.
What Is NAIDOC Week All About?
NAIDOC Week began with protest and pride. It grew from the 1938 Day of Mourning, when Aboriginal leaders gathered to speak out about injustice. In the 1950s, it shifted to July and began to focus not only on the fight for rights but also on celebrating culture.
Today, NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to learn more about First Nations cultures—and for First Nations communities to come together, stand strong, and share stories of strength and survival.
This year’s theme—”The Next Generation”—reminds us that our young ones are watching. They need role models. They need healthy parents, uncles, aunties, and Elders. Getting a health check might not feel like much, but it’s part of something bigger.
Free Health Checks Just for You
If you’re Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you’re entitled to one free health check each year. It’s called a 715 Health Check, and it’s made to suit your unique health needs.
There’s no cost at all. It’s fully covered by Medicare.
And you don’t have to wait until something’s wrong to come in. This check is about staying strong — for yourself, your mob, and the generations to come.
You don’t need a Medicare card on hand — we’ll help you sort it out if needed. Our staff understand your community and will make sure you feel welcome every step of the way.
What’s Involved?
It’s not scary or complicated. It’s a respectful chat and a simple check-up with a friendly doctor who understands the importance of culture and community.
During the check-up, we’ll look at things like:
- Your blood pressure, heart health and blood sugar
- Any aches, pains or signs of long-term health conditions
- How you’re feeling mentally and emotionally
- Your lifestyle — like food, exercise, sleep and smoking
- Your family medical history
It’s all done in a safe and welcoming space. You can bring a support person if you’d like. And if anything needs follow-up, we’ll help you with a care plan to stay on track.
Why It Matters
Too many of our people are affected by illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, depression and kidney problems — sometimes without even knowing.
Catching things early can make all the difference. Looking after your health now can prevent serious problems later.
You might feel fine. But it’s still worth checking in — even just to make sure you stay feeling that way.
A Week to Be Proud — And Proactive
NAIDOC Week isn’t just about the past — it’s about the future.
It’s about proud young leaders, strong Elders, powerful voices, and healthy communities.
And healthy communities start with you.
Getting a free 715 Health Check is one small step that makes a big difference. It shows your family you care about being here — today, tomorrow and in years to come.
Celebrate NAIDOC With Action
There’s no better way to celebrate NAIDOC Week than by looking after yourself and your loved ones.
Go to the community events. Share stories. Be proud of who you are.
And while you’re at it, make your health a priority. Getting a check-up isn’t just about ticking a box—it’s about choosing life, strength, and a future for the next generation.
