Who Should Get a Skin Check?

Anyone can develop skin cancer, but some people face a higher risk. You should consider booking a skin cancer screening if you:

Our Skin Cancer Check Services

At GoldCare Medical Centre, we offer a complete range of skin cancer detection and care services. You do not need a referral, and you will not be charged a gap fee if you hold a valid Medicare card.

Full Body Skin Check

Our GP performs a careful head-to-toe skin examination using a dermoscope. This is a specialised magnifying device that lets your doctor see details of your skin that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Mole Check and Spot Assessment

Have one or two spots that look unusual? You can come in for a targeted mole check without needing a full body examination. Your GP will take a close look at your concern and explain what they find.

Skin Biopsy and Lesion Removal

If your GP identifies a suspicious mole or lesion, they can arrange a skin biopsy or lesion removal right here at the clinic. You will not need to be sent to another clinic or specialist for most cases.

Skin Cancer Treatment and Follow-Up Care

If your results show skin cancer, our team can manage your treatment from start to finish. We offer surgical excision, wound care, and ongoing monitoring. We also provide guidance on sun safety to reduce your risk going forward.

Post-Treatment Care & Recovery

Healing is just as important as treatment. We provide wound care and scar management to help your skin recover smoothly.

Our team also offers guidance on sun protection and monitoring your skin for future changes. With follow-up appointments and ongoing support, you’ll have expert care long after treatment is complete.

Preparation for Your Skin Cancer Check

Preparing for a skin cancer check does not take much effort. But a few simple things before you arrive will help your GP examine your skin properly and give you accurate results on the day.

Remove Makeup, Nail Polish, and Fake Tan

This is the most important thing to do before your appointment. Makeup and foundation can hide spots on your face and neck, making them impossible to assess accurately under a dermoscope. Nail polish needs to come off completely, as melanoma can develop under and around your nails and polish masks that area entirely. Fake tan or self-tanning products also cause problems. They change the natural tone of your skin and can make a discoloured or changing spot much harder to detect. Avoid using them for at least 2 to 3 days before your visit.

Wear Clothes That Are Easy to Take Off

You do not need to wear anything specific. But loose, simple clothing makes it much easier to undress and redress during your appointment without wasting time. Avoid tight jeans, layered outfits, or anything complicated. You will keep your underwear on throughout the examination. Your GP will work around this and check the surrounding areas carefully.

Bring Your Medicare Card

If you are eligible for bulk billing, always bring your Medicare card to your appointment. This allows your skin cancer check to be processed at no cost to you. If you are unsure whether your card is up to date, check before you come in to avoid any delays at reception.

Think About Which Spots Are Worrying You

Before your appointment, take a few minutes to look at your skin. If there are any moles, spots, or patches that have changed recently or simply caught your eye, note where they are on your body. You can point these out to your GP at the start of the visit. Your GP will still do a thorough full body skin check regardless. But knowing which areas concern you helps them focus their attention in the right places and makes the conversation easier.

Skip Heavy Perfume or Body Lotion on the Day

Thick body lotions or oils applied to your skin on the morning of your appointment can make it harder for the dermoscope to get clear contact with the surface of your skin. It is best to skip these on the day of your check and shower without applying anything heavy beforehand.

What Happens During a Skin Cancer Check at GoldCare?

Many people feel nervous before their first skin check. Here is exactly what to expect:

Step 1

Your GP takes a short medical history Your doctor will ask about your skin type, past sun exposure, family history, and any spots or moles you are worried about.

Step 2

The examination Your GP will check your skin carefully using a dermoscope a handheld magnifying device. You can keep your undergarments on. If you prefer, a chaperone can be present during the check.

Step 3

Your doctor explains the findings Your GP will walk you through what they found and what it means. If something needs further investigation, they will explain the next steps clearly.

Step 4

Next steps if needed If a suspicious mole or lesion is found, your GP may recommend a skin biopsy, removal, or a follow-up appointment. Most of this can be done right at our clinic.
